I know the title of this thread sounds strange so let me explain. I spend alot of time looking at different artists playing the ukulele on youtube. So many of them seem to pulse their fingers on the strings when playing chords. Is there some advantage to this? Does it produce a different or better sound? If you see any of ukester Browns videos, he does it on every song. What's up with that?

They are controling the sustain of the chord. They release pressure to stop the chord ringing, then press again to strum. It is a rhythmic device.

I'm a total novice, but I've found it to be a really useful way of adding to my playing - along with muting with my palm, chunking, etc - it all adds variety :D

Hey, Jean... I thought that your avatar looked familiar. I can demonstrate this for you at the next Boston meetup, if you would like.

What I like about the left hand technique is it does not break the rhythm of your strum.
