Fewer "adult" banner ads

I disagree with this statement. Google looks at a LOT of things to help them decide what ads to serve up, and there's no reason to start accusing Ian of anything unseemly.
Google also takes unrelated links and keywords from sites you visit, as I understand, so a site like the HuffPost (which I visit) has links to all sorts of pap - celebrity crap I never look at. But the links are there on the news pages.

Well, since I never visit those sites and I'm using the municipal iPad tonight (which is NEVER used for even suggestive or controversial websites), it isn't based on what I frequent. In fact, I think I've only been on UU on this tablet twice before.

I'm a cranky senior with a solid marriage I would never jeopardize, loudly socialist and atheist views. I visit news sites, political and historical sites. Musical sites. Gardening sites. I read media/newspapers from India, China, Mexico and England as well as the US and Canada. I read literary sites about Shakespeare, Chaucer and Machiavelli. I visit sites that have science news, and revel in the latest breakthroughs in paleontology. I write about tequila, Henry Hudson, the history of motorcycles, municipal politics and film noir.

So it's not based on my personal history. I have no interest in that sort of pap. Never have, never will. I'd rather be caught listening to rap or country music before I was caught visiting them.

As I understand it, the host for these ads can filter what sort of ads get seen. I don't want to see ads for "cougar life" or other such dreck. It will certainly discourage me from recommending UU or showing it to others if that sort of ad pops up.

1+ for Henry Hudson!

Hmmm...

And to think that I thought everyone was seeing the same Mensa ads I do.

I keep on seeing ads for deoderant, perfume, toothpaste, shampoo, soap and new underwear. Does that mean anything? Its not even close to christmas yet.

All these banner ads for "cougars" and single men or women looking to hook up for affairs - is that the proper image for the ukulele community? They're pretty trashy - not pornographic, but of questionable taste and morality. Maybe you ought to filter what sort of ads you want to host.

Ok... let me explain how google ads work.

Google installs cookies onto your computer that track your browsing history. Then when you visit any site that serves google ads, google looks through your browsing history and tries to match the best ads for you with things that might be interesting to you. It's called semantic targeting.

So for example, the only ads I see on ukulele underground are for B2B web services like Kissmetrics, crazyegg, national pen company, intuit payroll, etc.

So let me just be clear, the ads that appear on ukulele underground are targeted to you by google. Google thinks, according to your browsing history, these are the ads you'd be most interested in. We don't choose any ads to serve.

All I get are Uke ads

Since I started looking for ukes online I get nothing but ads for uke lessons no matter where I am on the web. I guess I should be less single minded

Now that the why has been explained, there should be no reason to let this linger any longer . . .
