I can play this song fine, but I just use a D,D,U,D pattern and I was trying to figure out how to strum it like he does on the record.

This video is closer to the strum pattern I want, but I cant figure it out.

Sounds like this to me:

Code:
D d u d U d u

1 2 & 3 & 4 &

With the capital D (on beat one) and capital U (on the "and" of beat three) being accented a bit more strongly than the others.

Two other things you can do to get it to sound more like the Petty version:

1.) The strum is "swung". It's not a strictly even up/down strum.

2.) Don't play all four strings on the first beat. Just do a partial strum of the two strings or so that are closest to your head. (Some people call this a "touch"--you just sort of "touch" the strings.)

That is awesome. It sounds much better. I didn't even think about the strum being swung.

Thanks so much.
