Basketball Jones (Cheech and Chong)

Love Jones, wow talk about classic and so was Soul Train.

Interesting how so many people forget the great choreographed groups from the 50's - 70's and think it all started in the mid 80's with music video artists who created the grinding and twerking style focused more on physical exhibition than actual singing.

Anyone remember "The white shadow" tv show?

How about more modern iterations, "hang time" and "big shot"?
One of my favorite parts of the show was when they would sing acapella in the shower after workouts or games.

Basketball and golf have been my two favorite sports in my life, and at age 61 I still enjoy shooting baskets. Unfortunately I don't think I can play full court anymore. I'd probably start cramping after a couple times up and down the court. But I might give you a run for your money at H-O-R-S-E.

Hope you like my quickie rendition of Cheech and Chong's ode to basketball.

Nice shooting.
I miss playing hoops. I haven't touched a ball since I retired from teaching in 2016. The gal who taught PE always left a ball out for me. I'd go in every morning for 15-20 minutes before school.
Check out the videos on shooting by George Lehmann. Played in the ABA. I attended a clinic he gave when I was coaching middle school. He shot nonstop for about 90 minutes while he lectured. He missed once!!!! The majority of his shots never hit the rim. Absolutely amazing.

I'm glad we grew up with groups like the Temptations, the Jackson Five, and the Spinners!

Thanks, peanuts56! Are his videos on YouTube? I'll check it out! :)

Yes, there are quite a few of his videos on Youtube. When I attended his clinic, he had his son Todd with him. Todd was shooting by himself for a while. He was knocking down shots from 30 feet like they were layups. He had graduated from Drexel the previous year and I believe led the nation in assists. George's daughter Nicole was a starter at NC State. Her son plays college ball somewhere. George must be 80 by now and can probably still knock down 3's.

I was impressed by the video I found. His son and daughter were sinking shots one after another without a miss! Simply automatic. George was amazing, too! :)

I saw him in 1990 at a high school gym nearby. Only reason I remember the year is it was my 34th birthday! My wife asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday. Told her about this. We brought one of the kids I coached. He mentioned the very first shooting clinic he gave was at this gym around 76-77 after he had retired.
I also saw Calvin Murphy in this same gym in 1970. He went on a barnstorming tour taking on local all star teams. He went for 73 that night. He was guarded most of the night by a local guy who was a really good division 1 player at Georgia a few years earlier. This guy was no scrub and averaged 17 points a game in college. He was eaten alive by Calvin.
Calvin came back through my area a week or so later and scored 101 at a different high school. College stars barnstormed for $$$ a lot back then after their college career was over. Elvin Hayes came through a few years earlier. Easy money for those guys.
You on Oahu? My wife is from Kalihi and went to St Andrew's Priory. Grew up below Kam School. We fly over pretty much every year.

I remember Calvin Murphy as one of the greatest free throw shooters ever. His stroke from the charity stripe was automatic!

I was born and raised on Oahu, but moved to Japan in 1988, so I've been here in Yokohama quite a while now. I grew up in Kalihi and Farrington High grad! :)

Practically neighbors. My wife grew up on Kealia Dr. The house was sold some time back when my inlaws moved to Kailua to live with my brother in law.
We're in Connecticut, about 20 minutes north of New Haven. Calvin Murphy grew up in Norwalk and is a legend here in high school basketball. Super John Williamson was from New Haven. I saw him play in high school. He was like a man playing against children. John passed away in the mid 90's from kidney/diabetes issues.
Basketball is a way of life here in the cities. I played pickup into my 50's. Hips and knees don't work like they used to so it's golf these days. Stay safe and well.

Thanks, peanuts! You, too! Wish I could still play pickup basketball, but I got a lower back that's easy to tweak. Walking is my thing, now. I guess we have to adjust as we age! Take care! :)
