From my old days as a welding inspector I recommend one of these Tempilstiks ..They are a formulated wax crayon that melts at preset temperatures ..the one I use is the one in the 152 C/302 F range https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153387658804?var=453304471764

That beats spraying the iron with a water spray botte! I need to get one of those. (Edit) I see that's a British EBay, I think I'll try Amazon.)
