Gas?

Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome is discussed in this forum from time to time. It seems to be more of a problem in some countries than others.

When I played the violin, I never experienced VAS. And my husband, a pianist, never had PAS. What is it about mandolins, guitars, and ukuleles?

Edit: Accordions too? That would be AAS. If you were addicted to selling accordions, that would be ASS.

A large bowl of pinto beans with diced onion, hot sauce, and a few hard-boiled eggs on the side. Rinse it down with a big glass of milk...;)

I think GAS is more generally known as gear acquisition syndrome. And ukulele players can be prone to that, too.

Jim P. (@uke4ia) doesn't have a case of UAS, but he likes getting new effects pedals to craft new sounds. He says that he gets a much greater variety of sounds from acquiring different pedals and not from acquiring different ukuleles.

As a fellow string player, I think there is just less temptation because it so much more expensive! I think for this reason, people take a long time to shop for an instrument or bow. I have thousands in my bass and bow - and with a bit of luck, it's all I need for the rest of a lifetime of playing. A major step up from what I have would be $20,000 or more, and more lessons would be a far better investment in the next years. Pianos, don't even start.... I hope to stick with the ex-school piano I have forever, getting it tuned is enough of a cost already.

I think ukes are too snack-sized in terms of budget, and that's what makes buying a new one so tempting.

There are many types of "_AS"
From Mandolin Café - https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-138547.html
From Banjo Hangout - https://www.banjohangout.org/archive/339333
From The Accordionists' Forum - https://www.accordionists.info/threads/accordion-addiction-it-is-a-thing.7714/

I'm sure you could find many others if you Google "bagpipe/dulcimer/autoharp... acquisition syndrome".
In the dulcimer world it is DAD (dulcimer acquisition disease) (also the dulcimer tuning in Mixolydian mode). It is real, I suffered from it, but hopefully I'm cured (with 7 currently). 😉

I don't have DAD yet. I have two Appalachian dulcimers and Maggie has a hammered dulcimer, but I use Ionian DAA tuning so I would have "Dulcimer Acquisition Affliction".

Every group of musicians pretend to have some type of acquisition syndrome that doesn't exist. So many that there is now an acquisition syndrome syndrome, or as we refer to a person with these pretend syndromes - ASS.
