It breaks my heart that so many children suffer the lack not only of food, shelter and basic necessities but of books they can call their own.
Also that so many families use the library to stay warm in winter and cool in the summer, and in the worst weather, sometimes staying there all day, every day, thanks to kind librarians. They are truly a blessing in so many ways. I’d like them to be able to check out a life that includes decent shelter.

I’m not disagreeing but I don’t doubt that some will read political points into a post that is well meaning and kindly. Reflecting on your post I’d say that using Libraries is life changing - this thread has helped me remember how they certainly changed mine - and using them does enable many to, over time, “check out a life that includes decent shelter”.

As a further reflection just having a Library building within a community acts an inspiring beacon of hope as well as a pathway to self improvement and the better life that that can bring. There is much to love about Libraries and we’d do well to collectively remember how they enrich all the lives and futures of the communities that they are situated in.

Gorgeous. And what a contrast with the humble public libraries most of these posts refer to. Makes me think that library road trip could be amazing. You know, if the road crossed oceans.

Ben Franklin is often given credit for establishing lending libraries in CONUS. As with much of our history, old Ben certainly got the idea elsewhere, in his travels to European nations which had a far longer history of providing hope, inspiration and pathways to self improvement.
