Did some googling and couldn't find anything except very old posts with dead invite links. I feel it would be easier to connect with people if we had a discord. If there isn't one, I suppose I can make one. How many other people would be interested in this?

I've never used it, but I'm old! I typically just start a Private Conversation IM and if I want to talk or Facetime (I've advanced from a flip phone), put that info in it. How is Discord better (for us ol' timers)

I can connect in so far as I want to, on here. I’m on a piano Discord and tbh, after initial enthusiasm, its a bit of a “ghost town” now. Go for it though if you think the idea’s got legs.

It's a platform that allows you to talk to people through text or voice and seamlessly transition between the two (or do them at the same time). It also shows what game (sometimes it recognizes other types of software too) you're running currently.

It's a chat room, that's all. Ephemeral, hopeless for finding anything, a torrent of nattering disappearing into the darkness. It does little that a forum does not and lacks the utility that a forum has.

I'm not a fan, although I hide the fact pretty well on the whole.

I know the reddit uke sub tried a discord and it's not populated very often.

There was a short-lived Discord experiment here when the future of the forum seemed uncertain back in 2020. It wasn’t a replacement for the forum, but it did see sporadic activity for a couple of years.

If you still want to join, PM me your Discord username, and I’ll try to invite you. No guarantees the invitation link will still work.

I also prefer a forum and private message, which allows me to express everything I want to, post images, etc. My computer is my primary device, my phone is second. I'm not much of a social media person, forums are my preference. I tried being on a bass uke Facebook forum, but after a while, couldn't stand the Facebook operations and stopped. I tried to convince them that a forum is a much more efficient way to communicate, but not many heeded. I also tried Twitter/X, Instagram, none are as useful to me as is a forum.

I'm kinda new here but connecting pretty well.

While I do like the forum modality, I don't see why the two can't coexist. They fill similar roles, but with different niche pros and cons. There's no way to talk to people through voice on a forum.

It's a much more in the moment type of connection. You're just talking about what's going on right now, and depending on how active the server is, what you say could be gone in a matter of minutes hours days whatever, so people don't linger on the same topic for long.

It is for now populated primarily with bots, and I will be unplugging it soon. It was started long before I arrived, and nobody here now has the admin credentials. I have on my list of things to do to track them down and pull the plug....

....but that said, there's a small pocket of people there who do use it, the Ahnko Honu Takes The Lead crowd, and before I pull the plug, I'll see if they want to take it over as an "Ahnko Honu Takes The Lead" server, and remove any UU branding. First I have to see if that's even possible. :) It may come to pass that they'll need to start their own. But if any of those folks are reading this, you have my firm commitment that you'll know what's happening as I figure it out. Nobody will be pulling the rug out from under you....but it IS going away, so please plan accordingly.

I'll also note that UU+ briefly had a Discord server to support chat during their livestreams, but YT has of course added live chat during streams, so there is no longer ANY official UU involvement with Discord, nor will there be. It's just not something we have any interest in supporting in any form or fashion.

We have a dandy place for people to talk to each other already. :)

Funnily enough, ukuleles and Discord don't seem a good fit at all. I say that without judgement, just an observation. Look at Facebook, YT, TikTok, YT -- each of them have more ukulele content than any one person could ever possibly engage with. Absolutely swimming in it. Reddit has the one community, r/ukulele which, if you like Reddit (and I do) I can highly recommend. I joined there before I joined here, and as with YT, Facebook, Instagram, et al., lots of people do more than one of them.

But when I went to Discord specifically to see if I could figure out how to unplug our server there, I did some searching, and there's virtually no ukulele stuff at all. I was honestly surprised by this...but ultimately unconcerned. Like I said, we've had our Discord experiment, and want nothing to do with it ever again.

You can for now make your way to the Ahnko Honu Takes The Lead corner of the UU Discord if you can, and enjoy it while you can. There's no need to discuss it farther, though. Been there, not doing that again. If any of you want to be the ones to establish the ukulele beachhead on Discord, good luck and godspeed. :)

Thing is, you can't talk to people on a forum. Whether that be text or voice, discord allows for real-time conversation, which forums do not. If interest is low then fair enough, but I'm starting to actually get to know a couple members here, and while I don't know if they would use it, I feel like I could "be friends" easier through a platform like discord.

I think most of these things are age related. And internet forums go way back as a way for like minded, or single minded people to communicate and share information. I prefer them because it gives me time to look at what at I'm about to post and try to make sure I'm not offending anyone with my opinions or even my choice of words. I do however appreciate the technology and the various ways it can be used to improve our lives. I can also "lurk" around a forum and see if the people are actually offering up good advice and genuinely helping people, or just attacking other peoples ideas before I sign on. jmho.

Some people prefer things IRL than being online. You can PM someone your phone number and then talk. Sounds crazy, but it works.

I do think there's a possibility for a Discord server that would work for UU members that want to do that. Maybe we should just create a new Discord server if there's enough interest. I'm on Discord and use it for a monthly gaming session with a friend, and I actually use it to chat with or call my daughter when I'm out of the house. Otherwise, I'm not sure that there is a huge demand for it here. If more people pipe up wanting this, I could look into starting a new Discord server.

With the advent of email and texting, I much prefer communicating in writing so that I can always refer back to a conversion, and not have to recollect what was said, especially when having to get things done. I do the graphics and concert programs for the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic, the leader always wants to call and dictate item after item after item, I have to tell him to email or text. I've come to the point of not answering the call and text him back to email or text all the details.

My uke group meets twice a week on Zoom. When someone has an interesting item for us, we always say to put the details or link in the chat list.

We have a monthly open mic Zoom that I wish more folks here were taking part in, whether as audience members (like me) or as players (up to 2 songs per person). It's a lot of fun! We haven't done nearly enough to promote it (most of the promotion is through the paid UU+ portion of the enterprise) but it is in fact free and open to everyone.

As a result, it's been added to the new calendar! Here's the event listing, including the link: https://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/events/uu-open-mic-all-invited.15/

There's also a monthly open mic coordinated through the Seasons of the Ukulele Facebook group page, but I'm not on Facebook, so I don't have details to share. (Any Seasonsistas reading this, I'd love it if you could post something on the UU calendar!)

More broadly, @BiosphereDecay, if you're interested in really getting to KNOW people here and build lasting friendships, better to focus your energy on the Seasons of the Ukulele forum (hence Seasonistas) and its activities. It's a weekly song challenge, where, depending on the varying rules that each week's host chooses, you can post some number of songs per day, and the energy in that community is very spirited, to say the least.

Otherwise, anything YOU want to do to start an ukulele-themed Discord server, please do! Or like I said, go to the UU one that exists today, scroll past all the pornography-bots (which I assure you are there only to steal your data, rather than to provide you with high-quality adult content...but hey, at least the links are all broken :ROFLMAO: ) to find the Ahnko Honu Takes The Lead chat room, and make your plans with the folks there for what happens next. That's the one corner of the thing that's doing anything resembling what it was intended to do, which is why my plan is to work with them to preserve what I can of their experience.

But I really can't emphasize enough how opposed we are to spending any more energy on Discord. We spent a couple of years on it, it left us with nothing but a pile of bots and disgusting nonsense, and we're beyond done. As soon as I have the keys to the plug, I will be pulling it.

Thanks for the reminder, though! My to-do list is long enough that contacting my predecessor to see if he remembers the credentials keeps falling off. That thing really needed to be unplugged years ago, and I really will try to get to it ASAP. :)

@TimWilson , I don’t do Facebook, so know nothing about a Seasons Facebook page, but there is a thread on Seasons called “Seasonistas On line Get together/open mic” (I think). I’ve yet to participate but I believe it’s pretty regular, maybe even weekly.

in my experience, the best friends i have made here began with PM's,
and as you share and get to know them better, you then move from that space
to sharing email and video calls.

i'm on a discord group on FB and have found, especially when a number of people
are on the call, it's a bit chaotic.

that said, i appreciate your idea and the willingness to connect w/ people.
as someone who is a bit agoraphobic, online is all that many of us have
and that feels comfortable.

There was a discord when the old forum server was failing, and I installed the app but never found useful info on it. With new server this forum works well and I have no idea if the discord is still operational. Just do a forum search.
