Hi UU!

I've borrowed my grandfather's Lanikai CK-C and noticed something strange today.

I tune my open strings GCEA perfectly, but when I push down on a string, it is not in tune. For example, my open A string is great and in tune, but when I fret the 5th fret, bottom string, which is a D, it goes quite flat. Is this normal? What is the reason for it?

Thanks a lot!

What you are talking about is called Intonation. Perfect intonation is where you press down on every fret and they are all precisely at correct pitch.

Its kind of normal to have an inexpensive ukulele that requires some adjustment to correct the intonation. It takes a deal of precision to come close to perfect intonation.
