He stay one Sole'? I've heard Soles say "pah" but nevah "bah" (Soles get hard time saying words with "b" since not in native tongue). Maybe get different kine pidgin fo' soles, but no can mix da two, bad enough the Missionaries wen mess up the Hawaiian language because they too lazy fo' translate the Baibala Hemolele into more than one dialect. I hear pidgin being diluted with more words new replacing old and it saddens me. I know what I speak isn't the same as my kupunas but I wish it was so it wouldn't get lost. I was raised mainly Kailua/Waimanalo but spent years living on Big Island and Maui, and get family Kaua'i so I hear subtle variations all ova but "fink" and "bah" never in the pidgin vocabulary I grew up with. I rather stay makule, preserve what I know. Old dog no like learn new tricks. :) ;):shaka:

you know uncle, couple teacher kine guys i wala`au before time wen said, pidgin stay dying. the keiki dem talk mo hip hop kine talk now. and small kine true, cuz wen i talk story wit my younger cousins dem, da kine words they choosin mo differnt. the accents same kine but, planny words now same t'ing mainland kids using. but you know what? still yet when i talk with dem, they know what i saying too. even if i going say t'ings the old way. so sounds to me, look mo like pidgin evolvin' adding mo kine words to the "dictionary". befo time, the plantation when hanau pidgin so da japanee can talk to the portagee to da pilipino to da pake, etc. but now a days, talk story no mo da kine limits. not to say we talk all kine hybolics now, but when pidgin to da max when first come out, choke words stay dea, i nevah know da kine meaning too. some was too new fo me, some too old, some too country, some town kine pidgin, maui pidgin, and so forth. so even during my "hanabata" days, pidgin stay evolving. not even growing up, just evolving. not too say waht la`ie boy was typingwas pidgin, cuz to me was half pidgin half teenager computer talk, but das how pidgin going go.

no worries too uncle, stay people like me who go jellys erytime and go thru da books and go thru estate sales for pidgin kine stuffs. i collect everything from vinyl to comic books to letters, because fo reals, das my kupunas talk too. funny ting is me, i nevah hula, nevah paddle, i surf and fish but not like da oddah braddahs. nevah even play `ukulele too til now, my kuleana was collecting stories and mo`olelo.

all kapakahi my typing ah?

I too old fo' change hahd enough fo' remembah what I still get inside my po'o, no mo' room in dea fo' new tahts.
Funny ting in my circle of friends we started referring to quality imported beer as "kreen pottles", Sole style 'olelo. :D

Changes

I used to tink
Brah, F*** change!
I like how my life is.
No need do anything different.
I’m comfortable.
Isn’t dat it?
Isn’t dat life/

I started to tink one day
Ho would be nice if I could change
Change dis, change dat
Change, Brah, just Change.
But I neva knew how
Neva knew wot.

Now, ho killah!
Change is da bomb.
I wen realize dat
I am change
Every second of muh life
And you know wot?
I no need search for here or how
I just gotta feel and trust
And go and adapt and
Expand
Not in da waistline
Though dat could happen
But expand my awareness uh.

Yeah, das wot I tink about change right now.

I'm a haole, but wen my wife's dad staht to talk story wid us ees always fun!
The main time I slip up is when I go to L&L or King's or someplace and order portagee sausage eggs an rice or loco moco gravy all ovah. I know I gotta be careful wit da portagee but it just slips out I can't help it!

Local argument:

A: How come I come I stay you go?

B: cuz was goin wen came, how come you come, no call?

A:how I goin call wen I stay comin aready?

B: eh, wen goin stay come, go try call

A: nex time I no come, I goin

B: ok, next time you goin come, I stay, me I no go, but if you goin stay come, and me I no stay, no stay, go!

A: Cuz! I not going stay you stay gone! But me, if I stay comin, and you stay gone, den when I stay goin, and you stay comin, what?

B: Den no go come firs place

A: In da firs place I goin call, I stay comin, an if you goin go, me I no goin come, cuz when call to see if you goin go aready stay!

B: pahden me?

e you buggahs, try dis one, nevah get chance so I dunno. I no tink as good as da books cuz get pictchas, dis one no mo.

As a mainlander, this stuff is new to me (I almost said Greek to me).

But it's really interesting to see how it resonates with so many people. For example, I never knew until today that there's even a pidgin bible - and it gets great reviews on Amazon!

As Johnny Carson used to say: I did not know that. ;)

would be fun fo make, ah? but yeah waste time...

pidgin to da max, funny dat book. get one dictionary by the pidgin guerilla, uncle lee tonouchi too. not as popular as pidgin to da max but still good too and stay get more new kine words.

wen i moved continent, high school time, i remember somebody at my hi skool came back from vacation wit pidgin to da max and all the buks was tryin fo act. half da words they was sayin' i nevah heard before. "killah wiffah?" i figgaed um out, common sense cuz, but dese buggahs was treatin' da kine lik da kine was one all the time bible. so i wen make stink eye at dem when they ack wit me. i not saying the words not real, but pidgin from kauai not da same as pidgin from oahu jus like pidgin from `ewa beach going be different from town side. all hybolics to me but. nothing wrong fo tryin', no ack but.

and for all us Continent Hawaiians, this is a poem from Uncle Joseph Balaz...

DA MAINLAND TO ME

Eh, howzit brah,
I heard you going mainland, eh?

No, I going to da continent.

Wat? I taught you going San Jose
foa visit your braddah?

Dats right.

Den you going mainland brah!

No, I going to da continent.

Wat you mean continent brah?!
Da mainland is da mainland,
dats weah you going, eh?!

Eh, like I told you,
dats da continent-

Hawai'i
is da mainland to me.
