A Canadian icon, Ian Tyson, left the planet Thursday morning at 89 years old. I've loved his high-wailing Canadian tenor since I first heard it in the summer of 1962. I was at a street dance in Orillia and the music was provided by a bluegrass band, The York County Boys. Part way through the night, Big John McManaman, the banjer player, said that he was gonna have a couple of friends come up and sing a couple of tunes with the band. That was my introduction to the music of Ian & Sylvia.
One of my favourite Ian Tyson songs is Summer Wages. I have been intending to learn it for years, but here goes. Thanks for the venue Del.
I wish I still owned a cowboy hat to wear for this song.

Summer Wages - Ian Tyson

i came late to Ian Tyson. Really through another of my songwriting heroes, Tom Russell.
beautiful songwriter. the film they made together, where they each speak about the craft of
and showcase the process of songwriting is a 'must view' film. and w/ a few good ol time
stories thrown in. it's called Mano a Mano.

Ian first recorded Rambler Gambler on his and Sylvia's first LP accompanied only by his guitar. Sylvia did not sing on this song and it was so simple that it became a favourite of mine right away.

For a little while I’ve been following the seasons and finding songs to practice on my own that fit the theme that was going on. I came across this one for SOTU 550-Movie Songs hosted by LimousinLil (Val).
I had this recorded at the beginning of this week with a little video clip to go with it, but my phone didn’t have enough space to get it exported to my gallery in order to upload it to YouTube.
With only one day left to post for this season, I did a quick one-take..no video clip..nothing special..and STILL didn’t have enough space on my phone to finish the song! 🤣 But I’m determined to post something so here is a partial clip of Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid. 😊

Woot! One of us! One of us! Gooble Gobble. Gooble gobble.

Anyway, this is one of a few songs I've been meaning to get back to and re-record. The main thing that bugged my earlier covers were the drums not being in sync with the A, E, G on the 7s & 8s. Plus, I was also curious to see how my playing has improved since I first brought this song to the Seasons back in October 2021.

Here's my original cover from SOTU 506:

I took a few liberties with the new version because why not?

EDIT - I just watched the one from last year and noticed the current one has some big boy tempo going on!

Just to clarify, this Season is about doing songs you had planned to bring to a season but never actually got around to doing, not re-recording something you’d already previously submitted. I know this was a genuine misunderstanding, so I’m including your entry on the playlist, but pointing this out so that others aren’t tempted to follow suit. :)

Just to clarify, my list of songs I want to record are the songs I want to do and I'll do them regardless of whether they fit a season or not...which is why most end up on the misfits thread.

Anyway, the songs I want to revisit usually end up getting put on the back burner in favor of a new songs to work on...which is why this has been in my back burner for a while (which is why I felt it fit your season because it hasn't fit a season since 506).

It didn’t fit. As host, please just accept my friendly and reasonable judgement. And I put it on the playlist anyway.
Not wishing to be pedantic, but from my post introducing the season:
My gift to you this week is the opportunity to play and sing those songs that you’ve been meaning to bring to a season, but the plan has never quite come to fruition.

Last one from me. This was written in response to a songwriting challenge to write a truthful song about yourself.
It seems a suitable one to bow out on.

Thanks again for giving me this opportunity to post some of the songs I wrote at 50/90 but were never likely to fit a theme.

Bon any nou from Catalunya, y'all!

This is a rare triple-whammy entry from me. Do to the convergence of several irresistible outside forces, my life has been thrown out of its normal routine and into domestic chaos. There was a few hours there on a plane where I was technically homeless! So I missed the Miller Time week and last week and it's holiday there. Here at the end of the back burner week, for the third whammy, is a little number by a Rastaman named Jacob Miller, who wished us all an irie Christmas and a Dance Hall New Year

Happy New Year to everyone! I've missed the past month due to a bout of COVID. I'm still guzzling Tussin like it's going out of style, yet having frequent coughing fits. But this past year I worked up a lot of songs that I didn't end up recording, so I found one I can still sing at the moment. This is a song by the '70s Italian prog-rock band Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) that I'd intended to do for Season 554 (songs that mention musical instruments). I was hoping to also do another prog classic this week, Nine Feet Underground by Caravan, but I can't sing that high right now.

Happy 2023 to you!!

I first tried to learn this song from early 70s rock band Fanny early this year - I forget for which season - and I couldn't quite get it together. Then a few seasons back we played "songs about bad guys," and I tried again to learn this song about a bully in blue. And again I wasn't able to get it together.

The lyrics and chords have been open on my computer's desktop (my virtual back burner) for that whole time, I think, so no problem returning to it this week. This time I worked on it more, and got a version fully cooked.

Whew :)

And there are still a couple more songs open on the desktop that I wasn't able to get together for this season, though now I've got more confidence that they'll come together sometime :p

Season 567, along with the Christmas and New Year celebrations, is now officially over! We made it!

Only an utter fool would volunteer to host a season that started on Christmas Day, so, as the best qualified individual here (with a PhD in utter foolishness), I felt obliged to take it! So glad I did - after a slow start, and considering all of the festivities taking place, we ended up with a very respectable 52 crackers on the playlist - thank you all!

I’ll be back a bit later in the week to announce the winner(s) and tell you about prizes!

Happy New Year and beyond (yes - my good wishes to you all extend so much further than just the next 365 days)! :)

Edit: the host list is worryingly empty - the Seasons will grind to a halt if nobody volunteers very soon. Please sign up here - thank you!

Season 567 Wrap

Good evening everyone! Thank you all for your music and your songs - it was, as expected, a slow but steady week, and we ended with a very respectable 52 songs on the playlist. And every single one was a gem, making it a pleasure to host!

So many highlights for me, but two performances shone that little bit brighter for me, and each will win a uke-themed drinking vessel - ie a mug. That way, every time the winners enjoy their favourite beverage they can revel in the glory of their famous victory!

In no particular order, the winners are:

StoneyRun, for his fabulous cover of Van Morrison’s ‘Crazy Love’. This was my comment on YouTube: “Wow! Completely blown away by this! Your playing is fab! And your vocal is utterly spellbinding - full of character and emotion, and you hit every note right on the button! Amazing - thank you so much!”

Berni Armstrong, for his heart-wrenching original about dementia, ‘Tommo’. This was my comment on YouTube: “Tears streaming down my face as I watch and listen to this, Berni - it just about sums up the past year we’ve had with my Dad, whose dementia has declined rapidly since last Christmas. So much of what you sang here resonates deeply - even down to the flashes of humour that still surface at the most unexpected moments, just to remind us that he’s still in there somewhere. And when I go to see him I take a uke and we sing together - he still somehow remembers all the words, though he often forgets my name. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this!”

Please PM me with your addresses, guys, and I’ll get your prizes off to you as soon as poss.

And thanks again to all of you - it’s a joy and a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful community! :)
