Season 583 - Hit Me… Again!

Hi Everyone :)

Firstly, my apologies to all you sado-masochists out there - the theme isn’t quite what you might be expecting from the title! 😉

One of my earliest and most enjoyable stints as host was for Season 359, and called “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” (a title borrowed from a 1979 UK no.1 hit for Ian Dury and the Blockheads). In fact it was so enjoyable, I’d like to do it all over again!

I would like you to play any songs with a percussion backing all or most of the way through. This can be anything from a tapping foot, to a metronome, to a friend shaking a tambourine or even playing a full drum kit as long as it’s clearly audible. There are also a good few drum machine phone apps out there with a whole load of options – often free, and easy to use and play along to.

No more than one song a day please (or 8 in total for the week is also acceptable).

Collaborations and multi-tracking are welcomed.

Song choice is entirely yours, but I'd love to hear some originals.

The season will last for 8 days - start posting from 12.01am Sunday 16th April through to 11.59pm Sunday 23rd January (Hawaiian time).

I'll post comments on YouTube for all entries and would encourage you all to comment as much as possible too please.

I'll add a playlist to the bottom of this post as soon as we're under way.

There’ll be just one winner, and there will be a prize - details later in the week.

Have fun! 🤓

Masochist: Hit me.
Sadist: No!

Well, I used to have a couple of shaker eggs and a whole box of percussion toys, but those got left behind in my other country when I moved across the planet two years ago with only what I could fit in three suitcases and a carryon. So it took a while to rig up some uke-friendly percussion and balance all the audio and visual elements, but I think I got there. See what you think.

I'm sure this song must be this theme's anthem? Anyway, it's fun and easy, so I hope we'll see more and better versions than mine.

Todd Rundgren's "Bang the Drum All Day". (Yes, that is in fact the correct title ... I looked it up.)

PS, I did that other Ian Dury hit a while back - "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" - which is pretty much all bass.

Thanks Del " The Producer" of great Productions. I banged a tambourine with my foot the same time as I played and sang. Probably could have done with a towel to dampen it as it's pretty loud...but I guess that's the point to hear some percussion. I also added some garageband synth in sympathy with our host.
When I first heard this song about" Miss Ohio running around with her rag top down" I had visions of a topless beauty queen...but alas i found out a rag top is the roof of a convertible car :)

I went for the shaker egg in strumming hand technique (which works for me as I have big hands ;)). And then added some extra tracks for fun. This is U2's I will follow.

Bonjour, Del, et merci beaucoup pour la semaine! I should have been outside gardening as it is a beautiful day here, instead of which, I have spent an unnecessary amount of time cobbling together this version of "The Great Pretender," with a dodgy chorus and an even dodgier backing on claves and mini cajon. Oh, well ....

Morning all… thank you for some lovely early entries, though it was relatively quiet for the first day of a season. I’m guessing/hoping that you’re all taking a little time to plan and acquire the percussive apparatus needed for the week. I’ve just ordered a triangle of all things for my planned song - hope it arrives in time! In the meantime, keep on banging, everyone! 😲😉😆

I'm on the case, but I've been away this weekend and I can't do anything until I get back to my cowbell. More cowbell!

Here's an old story about an engineer and a hammer. One time my heating was broken, and I called a plumber in. He spent a while looking at pipes, examing every corner of the system, then eventually hit it with a hammer and I never had any trouble with it again. The real challenge, of course, is knowing where to hit it.

The rhythm here comes from my Boss Rhythm Partner, which I often use just for a click track to record to, but I think it sounds pretty good with a ukulele so I sometimes leave it in. I also added a Machinery Solo. And I added a bit of cowbell. Maybe it needs more...

I have a cowbell you can borrow Edwin. You don't have to bring yours to Canada.

I also have Fear The Reaper charted out for cowbell. (There are two more pages)

Thanks for hosting! This such a perfect timing since I've been working on this new k-pop song (which means I'm playing along to the drums + the vocals). Everything else is played by me. This is the first time I've played any of my instruments since February and I was quite rusty! I had a tough time reliably hitting Bm when I started.

Anyway, this is a super fun tune if you haven't heard of it. 4 on the floor beat & a ii V i VI chord progression in D major.

The chords are Em, A, D and Bm, if you want to play along. There's also a D7 in place of the Bm leading to the chorus.

Thanks for hosting, Del!
My solo soprano arrangement of The Dead's Casey Jones, featuring between-phrase fingertip percussion.
As I understand it, Robert Hunter's 1970-release lyric of "high on cocaine" was historically inaccurate because the famously- punctual engineer was a teetotaler who craved only the non-pharmaceutical version of speed.
I butchered what was intended to be a final harmonic C-note to punctuate the outro "[A7] And you know that no[D] tion. . . [G7} just crossed my mi[C] ind", which was no fault of Yowling Tom. His 12th fret harmonics ring loud, clear and true when I properly ‘cant and hover’ the meaty portion of my ring finger.
Enjoy!
