Season 583 - Hit Me… Again!

Hey everybody! Long time no see. It has been a dream of mine for many years to be able to cover this song. I wanted to be able to do it live. It seemed an impossible goal to me for a very long time. I just managed to bring it over the line, sort of, this week with the help of Del and my trusty metronome.

Choucoune is a 19th-century Haitian song composed by Michel Mauléart Monton with lyrics from a poem by Oswald Durand. It was rewritten with English lyrics in the 20th century as "Yellow Bird" by ??

A few weeks ago, a friend gave me and my little one an ORBA - a fun little handheld drum machine and sequencer!

I've also been writing a song these past couple weeks. Though it's not anywhere near complete, I'm pretty sure of one simple melodic motif.

Here's a one-take ukulele jam along with a loop of that little motif I made on the ORBA.

And the beat is super simple because I haven't figured out how to overdub more percussion yet. Heh.

Jürg Hochweber is a Swiss composer and guitar teacher who is very generous with his work. On his website you can find lots of compositions for beginners, intermediate and advanced players. I have played one of his compositions for ukulele for Mikkel's Uke From The Start season. This time I opted for one of his easy guitar solo pieces from Gitarrenzauber / Guitar Magic.

Learning how to do remixes on Instagram.
It's harder than it should be, so my timing is a little off, I didn't save the original full video, and don't think I can download now. Anyways... here's a 15 second clip!

And here endeth the season! A quieter week than I was expecting, but some stonking performances rolled in nonetheless. I’ll listen to the last couple of entries when I get home from work this evening, and I’ll be back later in the week with a wrap and details of the prize and prizewinner. Now please all join the stately procession to Chris’s funeral week. Thank you all for your fabulous music! :)

Wrap for Season 583

Thanks to all who took part this week - with just 35 videos on the playlist it was definitely a season of quality over quantity! Each entry was a delight, but there were two that particularly banged my drum - both performers will receive one of these fair trade percussive guiro frogs:

In case you don’t know, you run the stick along its back to make a ‘croak’ sound, and tap it on the head for a delightful and resonant ‘bop’.

The winners, in no particular order, are:

Bob, with his beautiful rendition of “Flirted With You All My Life”;

and

CeeJay, with his wonderfully improvised original, “Percussion Concussion”.

Please both PM me with your addresses and I’ll arrange delivery of your prizes forthwith.

Thanks to everyone again for your participation and for your wonderful music!

And for those that wish to see a guiro frog in action, here’s a collab I did a couple of years back with the multitalented and much-missed Liz Brinker - she’s playing one in the lower right middle pane:

Exceptionally cool prize, Del! Congrats to the winners!

Cool! That's a nice thing to wake up to! Thanks a lot, Del. I suppose it's quite fitting to win a frog with a song about croaking...

Expect to see that little fella make his seasons debut sometime soon!

Thanks again! X
