Season 597- PHOTOSYNTHESIS

What a day! I am working with a year old Turkey Vulture who is imprinted. I don’t know how he was imprinted (they nest as far from humans as possible), but he sadly is, and therefore has to stay with me. Normally our outings are sunshine and lollipops, but today he was wedged into his box like he was nesting. He was evasive while I tried to get him ready for our walk, and was really not into it until we had been out a bit. I wish I could explain to him that some dumb person wrecked his chances of making more turkey vultures…but I think he eventually settled into the fact that I am his family. In any event, today was WORK.
I want him to love the easy life he has (and he will eventually) and was kind of bummed coming home…
But then there is this!!! I can count on one hand the seasonistas I have met in person, and Andrew brought me two! Jim came through with Malvina, and Joo and Laurie…that is GOLD. Cua94 put me into the first records I owned ( I can still smell them), and Tanya tackled the rose (no easy task). I thank you all! Took my bird brain in an entirely different direction. I know my boy will settle in (and a huge part of me wishes I did not have to ask him to), but your songs made me feel a lot better about this day. Much love for your response, we still have a lot of time left. Keep ‘em coming!

If a CCR song fits the theme, then a CCR song must be done, right? :) Here’s a rough take on one I love to sing. I was just in the mood to belt it out real quick as a way to decompress. I had to cut the last part off because my voice couldn’t take anymore. :) Thanks for the week TCK! I might be able to get one more in (although I have a ton of ideas). This has been a lot of fun though! :)

That's a sweet story, Dave! (I don't think I shall ever have a vulture imprinted on me ... or anything/anyone else for that matter now; well, maybe the cats!)

What is the intersection between extraterrestrials (598) and plants (597)? Why, of course, it's "Little Shop of Horrors"!

If you're unfamiliar ... well, first of all, you must see the 1986 musical film forthwith! ... it is a tale of an alien from outer space come to Earth as a strange and interesting new plant ... with rather unusual tastes and evil on its mind ... and the hapless humans who first encounter it and don't understand the dangers until too late.

In this song, "Grow For Me", nerdy flowershop assistant Seymour attempts to nurse the plant, Audrey II, to health ... and discovers what it requires.

Verandah 2 Jam day 12.

I had another wonderful verandah visitor today! Chris MourningDove has added her beautiful voice, gorgeous harmonies, and dulcet baritone ukulele to a cover of "The Rose" I recorded a few days ago.

I started it back when "Inchworm" was proving harder than I expected, and AZChris suggested maybe "The Rose" in C might be quicker. He was right - I did it right away ... and then we finished Inchworm instead. Now Chris in RI has rescued it from orphanhood, in spectacular fashion.

In the meantime, Tanya has posted a fabulous self-harmonized version of "The Rose", so be sure to check that out as well!

So very sad to hear of the passing of Sinead O’Connor today. 😢

There’s a line in her biggest hit that would make it suitable for this Season. I covered it for a Season a while back. Hoping somebody will bring it here before the week’s out? Please?

Edit: if anybody would like to play and sing it along to my backing track I’d be very happy to send it to you. Contact me by PM?

So nobody has thus far taken up the challenge. And our esteemed host, Sir David Birdman of Cloverdale, has suggested that I should maybe have another go at it myself for this Season. If I’m honest, it had already crossed my mind, so I didn’t need that much encouragement. I’ve re-done the uke and vocal parts, and added some harmony vocals here and there too.

“All the flowers that you planted in the backyard
All died when you went away…”

Rest in peace, Sinead. 😢

Y’all came on STRONG last night! Haven’t had time to watch all this greatness yet, but I will settle in soon for some good music- Keep ‘em coming!!! Looks like we still have 14 Hawaiian hours on the week!

You know what song would be cool to do? It’s too difficult for me, though, especially with only a few hours left. Feeling Good by Michael Bublè (I think it was originally done by Nina Simone though). “Blossom on a tree, you know how I feel…(and later) scent of the pine, you know how I feel…I’m feeling’….goooood” 🎶✨❤️ That would be a fun one. 😊

Those were a ton of fun gang! Sitting out with the smoker (I don’t know why I cannot just leave it) tapping my feet and playing along- thank you for the entertainment! Watching a smoker is SUPER boring 😂
All caught up! Make sure I got everything were it goes. 113 so far, what a great time this week has been!!

Where The Wild, Wild Flowers Grow - Ola Belle Reed

A song Maggie and I have been doing for decades, but this is the first time on the ukulele. We were introduced to the song via a Cathy Fink LP.
To make it easier, I tuned the uke like an open G banjo capoed up. Since there was no thumb string, I played it Carter-style rather than clawhammer. There is a link in the YouTube notes to a banjo version that we did in the mid-nineties.

This is an R.E.M. song that refers to the killings of Mayans by the Guatemalan government in the 1980s. In R.E.M.'s oblique lyrical style, the suggestion is that the beauty of the country is actually coming from flowers growing on the graves.

One more from me before going to bed. This version is super slow because I just looked the chords up today-and it has a LOT of chord changes. So if you want to sleep..listen to this. Haha. :) I thought I was done for this week but then I ended up really wanting to play this one. So this is the best that I could get it today. Pics are of various places: here as well as SC and WA from trips I had taken in past years.
Have a good night, everyone. 🩵

Like I say in the video, Steve got pretty candid about his son’s death…and asked us to sing his songs. I got this. Thank you Justin Townes Earle.

118! That is a lot of really amazing songs! Thank you all for tuning in and playing along, smiling ‘til it hurts here in the ‘Dale. All caught up, make sure you are on the playlist! We still have time here- hoping for a few more!

And what else is at the musical (and movie) intersection of plants (597) same otherworldliness (598)?

Why, of course ... "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"!

YES, this is a real movie, and YES it's hilarious, and YES you should see it ... right away!
(Apparently it turned into 3 more movies, an animated series, and a novelization ... so guess what I'll be doing tonight?!)

Verandah 2 Jam day 13.

Omigosh ... at 11:15pm Hawaii time, I suddenly remembered I meant to do this one for ya, Dave!

I'm pretty sure it's weird enough for 598 as well.

(I had to take a quick intermission from watching "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", which is still every bit as cleverly hilarious as I remembered from 4 decades ago. It's on YouTube, free ... go there now.)
