SOTU 604 - Love & Heartbreak

So here’s a thing - a cover of a song by ’80s synth pop duo Yazoo (known as simply Yaz across the pond) - but it’s just me, baritone uke and capo (with some added reverb and effects). Not a synth or keyboard in sight - I can barely believe it myself! This is probably my favourite Yazoo song of all time - a track from their debut album “Upstairs At Eric’s”, it was never released as a single. Why not?!

It describes what I’ve always taken to be the hours following a breakup. 😢

A few years back, I tasked one of my advanced English classes to work together to translate the lyrics of this song from Burmese to English. I then arranged and paraphrased the resulting stanzas into a song. That song became my entry into week 408... Now, I tackle Lay Phyu's original.

Thanks, Thura!

SOTU 604 This is definitely a heartbreak song. Originally recorded by Ernest Tubb and Loretta Lynn in 1964, it was covered later by the great Leon Redbone. I recorded this in my "man cave," which is a 12' x 16' shed near a barn. Please ignore any goats you may hear trying to sing backup.

This is great, Marty and it's really good to see you here! Did you know that your "comments" are turned off?

a song about love i wrote and recorded this morning.
with some cartoons on white board.
words here:

His love affair with the word Love
Started when he was five years old
It wasn't a word often heard
Except on the tele and in books

Her love affair with the word Love
Started when she was 7 years old
When Uncle Christmas touched her there
"It was love, it was love, it was love."

His love affair with the word Love
Started when he was 8 years old
When daddy beat the s** out of him
"It was love, it was love, it was love."

The word Love makes the world go crazy
The word Love makes the world go crazy
The word Love makes the world go crazy
The word Love makes the world go crazy

When you say you LOVE me, and I say I LOVE you
When you say you LOVE me, and I say I LOVE you
When you say you LOVE me, and I say I LOVE you
When you say you LOVE me, and I say I LOVE you
When you say you LOVE me, and I say I LOVE you

I played my new guitalele. The crows were making noises when I was recording. Sounded like human laughter.

I got a request today! I wasn't too sure about it at first, and would never have thought or dared to do it on my own, but once I learned it in my key (D) instead of Susanna Hoffs' (G), it works surprisingly well. Plus the world needs more all-female rock bands.

Remember my French mando-friend Denis from a couple weeks back? He occasionally hears a new-to-him song and becomes obsessed with it. The first time I experienced this was when I asked him to accompany me, at the Esk Camp and Jam where we first met, on "Down Under". (He's been here 28 years and claims to be more Aussie than French but had never heard Men At Work ... you decide. 😆)

Well, today I got home to a message from Denis asking if I could do this song, his newest obsession.

Here, by request, is "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles.

What a great theme this week. There are so many wonderful songs to choose from. I tried the Billy Joel song, 'Just the Way You Are', with my "new to me" Baritone. Please forgive the bad audio this time, (and a few chord mishaps, as I learn the Baritone)... you will also hear a plane overhead and my dog shaking as she woke up from her nap.

Good morning all! I've got a bit of catching up with all your songs over breakfast.

It's the last day, so get your ukes and get jamming!

I'm currently editing the song I recorded yesterday and will probably put together another one after that, so it's a long day for me.

Looking forward to what the final day brings!
