SOTU 606 ~ Autumn Moon Festival/Harvest ~

Thanks for all the wonderful videos folks have shared. I'm just now getting started with listening and trying to figure out how to share the playlist. It's been a while :) Cheers ~

Thanks for hosting, Kev!!!
Here is an original which I have just posted on 605 too 'cause it fits.

Words here:
The Light Man Song (2015)

Sandy had a miscarriage
Their names were Pete and Josh
Kaile never met his folks
They didn't want to see him
LingLi was crying at the police station
They said it was her fault for dressing up like a slut

Ryan lost his pinky
Someone screwed up the setting
Kim returned the stuff rabbit
She wanted diamonds
Kenny was angry no one gave a s** about his paintings
He used the hippest ideas, you see

Misty could not go out no more
They put a lock on her door
Benny had diabetes
So he needed his insulin
JooJoo's neck was aching
She's been watching too many videos on the ukulele (It's true)

You don't see sunlight
Your eyes have mud and lies
You don't see moonlight
You're shrouded in your self-pity
So open the windows and let the light in!
Let the moon, the stars, the crying, the laughing, the cat
the smoke, the traffic, the singing, the flies, the air,
the night and the light in...

Let the light in!
Let the light in!
Let the light in!
Let the light in!

(i was trying to shake loose my finger muscles at the start....I looked silly doing that so I included it. I use open D tuning here)

EDIT: i saw some mooncakes when i went to the shops today. We eat mooncakes and give them as gifts during Mid Autumn Festival. Traditional ones usually have red or white lotus paste or red bean paste as filling.
The black filling in the cut one is red-bean.

Hi Joo, thanks for the bring and for the photos of moon cakes. I'm afraid I did a poor job of connecting this weeks theme to the Asian celebration of the Mid Autumn Moon Festival which was the primary motivation behind choosing this theme. Every one of my 60 plus uke students are Asian and so I've been immersed in the theme via song choices and performances over the last few weeks culminating in a big party this coming Friday!

This song was one of the very first ever viral videos, by talented designer and songwriter Joel Veitch at rathergood.com - in early 2003, two years before YouTube existed.

It features two rather hideous animated critters called spongmonkeys, with bulging humanoid eyes and bad teeth. The one on the left sings the song in a screechy scratchy high-pitched voice while his buddy plugs away on the guitar.

I of course fell in love with it the instant I first discovered it back then, and have been wanting to cover it. So thanks, Kev, for the opportunity!

You'll be relieved to know that I dropped the key several notches and did not attempt to replicate the inimitable spongmonkey singing tone. I did however make my best attempt to replicate the look.

PS, the Quiznos Sub chain apparently liked the song as much as I did. It is an odd note of history that they hired Joel and his spongmonkeys and used a version of the song in a US TV ad campaign throughout 2004.

PPS, only today did I finally learn that "Spong" is the process of adding human eyes to animated characters. Longstanding mystery solved!

Here's my slightly less hideous version of "We Like the Moon".

And here for the full experience is the Spongmonkey original.

That sounds very exciting!
Will you all be going for a walk in the dark carrying paper lanterns? I loved that when I was a child, going on an adventure at night each carrying a paper lantern. The challenge was not to let the candle burn the lantern.

Reading what you wrote made me go and record a quick version of this traditional Uyghur folk song for you, Kev. Not sure if you know it? I am sure some or many of your Asian uke students know it. I am singing it in Mandarin.

Raise your veil, that I might see your long, slender eyebrows.
They are like tips of the crescent moon.
Raise your veil, that I might see your bright eyes.
They are like the dazzling ripples of autumn.
Raise your veil, that I might see your cheeks.
They are ruddy circles, like red apples.

Gardening by the moon.
Off topic but this might be of interest to gardeners who want to now when to plant and when to harvest... and does the moon influence those things... or just to know how other gardeners are doing from around the world... if climate change is real and how is it is effecting harvests

“Moon River” was originally written by composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer for the 1961 film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Mancini revealed in an interview that it only took him about 30 minutes to compose the song.

“It had to be in keeping with the character of Holly Golightly, the star character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and I had to bear in mind the limitations of Audrey Hepburn’s voice,” he said. “I worked the whole song around a simple guitar basis, although the guitar isn’t heard much during the number.”
