Think this was originally a Jimmie Rodgers tune called "Waiting for a train". Mississipi John Hurt fingerpicked it and changed the lyrics recording it as "Let the mermaids flirt with me". I heard a recording of John Hurt doing his fingerpicking with the Jimmie Rodgers words. This is an attempt at that.
