Why Violins Have F‑Holes

I never knew about the bass bar. I presume that a violin made for a left-handed player would have it placed on the other side.

Curiously, there was no mention of the sound post on the treble side.

Are f-holes (and sound posts) only required (necessary) on archtop instruments?

Oh:

I played one of these a few years ago, it was for sale. I liked the tone, but it was quiet.
